About us

Welcome to Negus Winery. Alexandria, Virginia where tradition meets innovation in every sip. Our journey began with a rich history in the world of brewing. Previously, I spearheaded a successful beer business, introducing two distinctive styles – the robust Teff Beer and the beloved Negus Craft Lager Beer.

However, as the pandemic swept through, reshaping lives and businesses, I made a bold decision. Determined to embrace my roots and preserve our family legacy, I delved into the art of Tej, also known as Honey Wine. Guided by my incredible mother, an exceptional Tej artisan, I honed my craft every step of the way, blending her traditional methods with a modern twist I acquired through my brewing experiences.

In honor of her expertise and devotion, I proudly present Mama’s Honey Wine, a testament to the passion and expertise that runs through generations. Our label embodies the essence of heritage, love, and unwavering dedication. Join us in celebrating the exquisite fusion of tradition and contemporary finesse, encapsulated within each bottle of our meticulously handcrafted Honey Wine.

We did a wine flight and tour of the meadery next door. In total 7 wines and a tour for $38 was a deal. The owner gave us so many fun facts and answered all our questions. Super friendly local business, with unique flavors that you can’t find elsewhere. I really loved the honey wines!

This winery is a delight! Don't be put off by the location (it is in a bit of an industrial park near a towing place) they have done a great job making it feel nice inside and out. The wines were great, we tried the flight and got to try them all. The unfiltered versions of their honey wines were our favorite choices. Put this spot on your list!

My recent visit to Negus Winery in Alexandria, VA, was a revelation. Tucked away behind the metro station in an unassuming industrial area, Negus Winery proudly stands as the first Ethiopian Honey Wine establishment in the DMV area. The tasting options, ranging from a single glass to a comprehensive seven-wine tasting for $35, showcase a distinctive collection not commonly found in the DMV. Each wine tells a story of craftsmanship and innovation that sets Negus Winery apart. Despite the modest space, the ambience is intimate, offering a cosy setting for wine exploration. The delightful staff, whose names elude me, were not just sweet and welcoming but also displayed an impressive knowledge of the wines they poured. Their enthusiasm added an extra layer to the tasting experience, making it not just a journey through flavours but a genuine connection with the winemaking process.
Navigating the small space might require a brief wait for a seat or a willingness to share a communal table, but the intimate setting only enhances the overall charm. Every wine presented during the tasting was not only excellent but uniquely crafted, making it challenging to articulate their profound character, yet undeniably worth the drive and the price. Negus Winery isn't just a destination; it's a hidden gem in the DMV area. The exceptional wines, coupled with the warm and knowledgeable staff, create an experience that transcends the ordinary. This winery isn't just a treat for oneself but also an extraordinary present for any wine lover in the DMV area. If you seek a wine-tasting adventure that defies the norm, Negus Winery is a must-visit destination.
